City Services
Gothenburg’s city administration is led by an elected mayor and four city council members. A professional administrator employed by the city manages the day-to-day operations. The city council meets bimonthly. Bringing testimony to the City’s enterprising track record are a long list of projects including: computerization in city offices; automated electric load management reducing electric rates; major expansion of the Carnegie Library; nearly 100% success in applying for CDBG funds; an innovative neighborhood revitalization program; railroad overpass; new/existing streets, roads and state highways under resurfacing/widening; waste treatment plant, community child care center.
The Tree Board ensures that Gothenburg’s abundant variety of trees is continually enhanced. Volunteers monitor the condition of trees, replace diseased or dying trees, plan for landscaping new community projects and offer advice to homeowners. Gothenburg has been recognized as Nebraska Tree City USA for 33 years.
The Volunteer Fire Department has a 44-person squad of all-volunteer firemen. The six-bay facility is large for a city of our size. The average time lapse from the moment a fire/emergency call is paged to when the first unit is enroute is 2.3 minutes. Volunteers attempt to qualify as Emergency Medical Technicians within three years of joining.
The Gothenburg airport at an elevation of 2,555 feet provides two instrument approach runways and a fuel station. Overnight hanger space is available.
